Setting the table
- Coffee table, appproximately 85cm square.
- 1.5×1.5m purple tablecloth, obtained from the market in Mixcoac where my grand-mother sources tablecloths.
- Dried Cempasúchil petals (Mexican Marigold, Tagetes erecta)
- Small handmade reliquary box, painted black with orange detailing.
- Photos of deceased family members
- Letters to deceased family members
Action
The table is located in the middle of the space. I dress the table with the table cloth and place the open box in the centre of the table, facing south towards Mexico City.
I place a layer of Cempasúchil petals in the bottom of the box, followed by the photographs and letters to deceased family members. I proceed to fill the remainder of the box with Cempasúchil petals and close it.
I cover the remainder of the table with layers of petals until I run out, approximately 1 inch deep. I sing a song in spanish as a final invitation.
En la mesa
- Una mesita de café, midiendo aproximadamente 85cm por lado
- Mantel de 1.5m cuadrado, obtenida en el mercado de Mixcoac donde mi abuela adquiere manteles.
- Pétalos secos de Cempasúchil (Mexican Marigold, Tagetes erecta) .
- Relicario chico hecho a mano, pintado de negro con detalles naranjas.
- Fotos de familiares difuntos.
- Cartas a familiares difuntos.
Acción
La mesa se coloca en el centro del espacio. Yo visto la mesa con el mantel y ubico el relicario abierto en el centra de la mesa, mirando al sur hacia la Ciudad de México.
Coloco una capa de Cempasúchil en la base del relicario, seguidos por las fotografías y cartas a familiares difuntos. Procedo a llenar el resto de la caja con Cempasúchil y la cierro.
Cubro lo que resta de la mesa con capas de pétalos hasta que se acaba, aproximadamente una pulgada de profundidad. Canto una canción en español como invitación final.
