Hello Avocados,


It’s such an honour to be invited to speak to you. I hope you are well during this extraordinary time. I know we depend a great deal on you and your fellow flora to bring us joy and warmth by just being who you are, so thank you.

We are fortunate that you, your siblings, and fellow flora can be anywhere in the world spreading your joy to all who may need it. How else could we enjoy avocado trees, fig trees, poinsettias, and even olive trees outside of your native homes?

You keep communities together and traditions intact and with that, people don’t have to give up the cultural customs they’ve left behind when they too emigrate to another country. We are free to can tomatoes in August for pasta sauce all year round, or crush wine grapes for wine making in September to enjoy at every meal; it would all end without you.

It’s truly awe-inspiring to witness the growth, strength, and determination of a plantlet laying down roots and grounding themselves. Deciding this is where they will stay and deciding to flourish through good weather, bad weather, ideal conditions and the most dreadful; to not give up so easily, persevere and look for the ray of sunshine in the eye of the storm. We could learn a thing or two from you – how to be kinder, more giving, humbler, braver and more tolerant.

Es un gran honor ser invitada a hablar con ustedes, espero que se encuentren bien en éstos tiempos extraordinarios. Sé que dependemos en gran forma de ustedes y toda la flora relacionada para traernos alegría y calidez solamente por ser quien eres, entonces muchas gracias. 

Somos afortunados de que ustedes, tus prójimos, y flora relacionada, puedan estar en cualquier lugar del mundo esparciendo su alegría a quien la pudiera necesitar. ¿De qué otra forma podríamos disfrutar de árboles de aguacate, árboles de higos, nochebuenas, y aún árboles de olivos fuera de nuestros países natales? 

Mantienen comunidades unidas y tradiciones intactas y con eso, las personas no tienen que abandonar sus costumbres culturales que hayan quedado atrás cuando también emigran a otro país. Somos libres de enlatar jitomates en agosto para preparar salsa para pasta todo el año, o machacar uvas de vino para preparar vino en septiembre para disfrutar en cada comida; todo esto se acabaría sin ustedes. 

Es sumamente inspirador ser testigo del crecimiento, fuerza, y determinación de una plantita estableciendo raíces y asentándose en la tierra, decidiendo que aquí es donde se quedarán y decidiendo prosperar en buen clima, mal clima, condiciones ideales o en las más pésimas; de no rendir tan fácilmente, de perseguir y buscar el rayo de luz en el ojo del huracán. Podríamos aprender una cosa o dos de ustedes  — de como tener más cariño, de compartir más, ser más humildes, valientes y más tolerantes. 

Deseo solamente lo mejor para ti, mis queridos aguacates — ya tienen un gran inicio con su papá Oscar
