Dear Avocados,


Do you know that right now you are the topic of hot conversation? People just want to know how to raise you! 

Naturally, people love to eat you, but lately people have become obsessed with making you a houseplant too. I do not know if it is for the Instagram aesthetic or because you grow up to become such a beautiful tree. What I do know from raising a fair share of avocados myself is that each stage of your growth is so unique, and when someone finally manages to make one of your seeds sprout it is the most rewarding feeling. I like to think of it as cracking The Avocado Code. 

As we are here to share wisdom, I figured I will share my take on the best way to raise an avocado.

1. Clean the seed. Rinse it under water and feel free to use a cleaning brush 

2. Wrap the seed in paper towels, and lightly moisten the paper. You can do this with a spray bottle. It is important that we do not end up with excessive moisture. Excessive moisture = rot. 

3. Place the seed still in the paper towel in a Ziplock™ bag, and put it on your windowsill. 

4. Check in on the seed every 5 days or so. Let some fresh air into the bag and change the paper if it gets gross. 

5. After 2-3 weeks you will see that the seed has cracked and the first root will emerge. Keep it in the bag until the roots are peaking out from the seed and have become 3-5cm long.

6. Pin the seed then with toothpicks and place it in a glass with water (roots down). You do not want the whole seed submerged in water. 

7. Wait for it to grow a stem! When the stem is about 15 cm tall, you can move it to soil.

8. Remember – the avocado likes a chunky soil mix, not just regular potting soil. Give that baby some bark or perlite, maybe some coco fibre. 

9. Keep the soil consistently moist and it will grow to be a beautiful tree.

Lastly, the thing with avocado trees is that they are a bit of a diva. If you really want it to become a tree you have to prune it. Treat it like a bonsai tree, and snip that top growth. I know it is scary, and it will look ugly at first, but it will be so worth it. It will branch out for you and sprawl. With that said, they do require a bit of love and attention and may all of a sudden drop all their leaves on you. Then again, it’s just an avocado plant. Think about how many avocados you have in a year? Endless possibilities to make more trees. If one dies on you, plop 6 new seeds into a Ziplock™ bag and you are good to go.

¿Saben que ahorita son un tema candente de conversación? Gente quiere saber cómo criarlos!   

Naturalmente, a la gente les encanta comerlos, pero recientemente la gente se ha vuelto obsesionada con volverlos una planta doméstica también. No sé si es por la estética de Instagram o porque crecen a ser árboles tan bellos. Lo que yo si sé de criar un decente huerto de aguacates es que cada etapa de tu crecimiento es especial, y cuando alguien logra hacer que uno de tus huesos broten es el momento más gratificante. A mí me gusta pensar en ello como develar El Código Aguacate. 

Ya que estamos aquí para compartir sabidurías, se me ocurre que puedo compartir mis pensamientos de las mejores formas de criar un aguacate. 

1. Limpia el hueso, enjuágalo en agua y siéntete libre de usar un cepillo para limpiarlo. 

2. Envuelve el hueso en una toalla de papel, y humedécelo levemente, esto lo puedes hacer con una botella de spray. Es importante que no nos quedemos con una humedad excesiva. Humedad excesiva = pudrimiento. 

3. Coloca el hueso dentro de las toallas en una bolsa de Ziploc™, y ponla en el antepecho de una ventana. 

4. Checa el hueso cada cinco días más o menos. Deja que entre aire fresco a la bolsa y cambia el papel si se vuelve asqueroso. 

5. Después de 2 a 3 semanas verás que la semilla se ha agrietado y la primera raíz va a dar a luz. Mantenlo en la bolsa hasta que las raíces sobresalgan el hueso y hayan llegado a 3-5 cm de largo. 

6. Clava la semilla con palillos y colócala en un vaso con agua (raíces hacia abajo) No quieres que la semilla esté sumergida por completo. 

7. ¡Espera a que crezca un tallo! Cuando el tallo tiene 15 cm de altura, lo puedes trasplantar a la tierra. 

8. Recuerda  — al aguacate le gusta una mezcla de tierra maciza, no nada más tierra normal para plantar. Dale al bebé algo de trozitos ó perlita, quizás fibra de coco. 

9. Mantén la tierra consistentemente húmeda y crecerá a ser un bello árbol. 

Lo último con aguacates es que son algo divas. Si de verdad quieres que se vuelva el árbol lo tienes que podar. Trátalo como a un bonsai, y recórtale el crecimiento de hasta arriba. Sé que dá miedo, y que se verá feo al inicio, pero valdrá la pena muchísimo. Se empezará a bifurcar para ti y así esparcirse. Con eso comentado, si requieren algo de amor y atención y de repente sin aviso tirarán todas sus hojas a tus pies. Pero bueno, solamente es una planta de aguacate. Piensa ¿Qué tantos comes en un año? Posibilidades sin fin de crear más árboles. Si uno muere en tus manos, hecha 6 nuevas semillas en una bolsa de Ziploc™ y estarás listo de nuevo.
